Do you know who are the top five Championship all-time scorers? They might not have conquered the Premier League, but they built legendary careers in the second tier
The EFL Championship is often described as the ‘meat grinder’ of English football – a 46-game marathon that tests the limits of even the most seasoned professionals.
While the Premier League offers the global spotlight, the second tier is where true legends are forged on cold Tuesday nights and through grueling winter schedules. Within this chaotic landscape, a unique breed of striker has emerged: the ‘Championship Specialist'” – who turned this chaos into their personal playground.
Let’s count down the top 5 Championship all-time scorers.
5. Chris Martin – 114 Goals
-
Norwich City (55 apps – 8 goals), Crystal Palace (26 apps – 7 goals), Derby County (201 apps – 67 goals), Fulham (30 apps – 10 goals), Reading (10 apps – 1 goal), Hull City (30 apps – 2 goals), Bristol City (88 apps – 15 goals), Queens Park Rangers (16 apps – 4 goals)
Chris Martin is a classic product of the Norwich City academy, having progressed through the ranks to feature for the first team between 2006 and 2013. However, his early years at Carrow Road were defined by a series of loan spells, wearing the colors of Luton Town, Crystal Palace, Swindon Town, and Derby County.
The true turning point in Martin’s career arrived in 2013, when he made his move to Derby County permanent on a free transfer. This signing would later be viewed as one of the biggest bargains in the club’s modern history. His tally of 53 goals in his first three seasons at Derby was a resounding statement of his predatory instincts and cemented his status as one of the most feared target men in the division.
As his long tenure at Derby eventually wound down, Martin continued his journey as a reliable “journeyman” of the second tier, moving to Fulham, Reading, and Hull City, before eventually making permanent transfers to Bristol City and Queens Park Rangers. Despite his impressive consistency in front of goal, Martin’s career stands as a textbook example of the “Championship specialist” trope.
However, the primary barrier between Martin and Premier League success was a lack of raw pace. During Norwich City’s 2011-13 top-flight stint, he struggled to adapt to the speed of the game, managing only five appearances in the Premier League without finding the back of the net.
While he may not have conquered the top flight, his legacy remains as one of the most durable and effective strikers to ever grace the Championship.
4. Ross McCormack – 120 Goals
-
Cardiff City (74 apps – 25 goals), Leeds United (144 apps – 53 goals), Fulham (89 apps – 38 goals), Aston Villa (20 apps – 3 goals), Nottingham Forest (7 apps – 1 goal)
Ross McCormack began his footballing journey in his native Scotland, developing his craft at Rangers and Motherwell. Aside from a brief loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, McCormack’s true rise to prominence began when he joined Cardiff City in 2008. He wasted no time making his mark, exploding onto the Championship scene with 21 goals in his debut season.
The pinnacle of McCormack’s career was undoubtedly his time at Leeds United and Fulham. Between 2013 and 2016, McCormack was untouchable, netting 76 goals in just three seasons. His individual brilliance was recognized with three separate “Player of the Year” awards at his respective clubs, and he reached the summit of the division in 2013/14, winning the Championship Golden Boot with 28 goals.
By 2016, McCormack’s performance led Aston Villa to pay a fee of £12 million. However, this move marked the beginning of a sharp decline. A subsequent loan move to Nottingham Forest failed to reignite his spark, and McCormack eventually moved away from the English spotlight.
Despite a difficult end to his time in the UK, his legacy remains untarnished. With 120 Championship goals, Ross McCormack stands as one of the most prolific and technically gifted players to ever play in the division without ever making a major impact on the Premier League.
3. David Nugent – 121 Goals
- Preston North End (115 apps – 34 goals), Portsmouth (44 apps – 13 goals), Leicester City (130 apps – 49 goals), Middlesbrough (38 apps – 8 goals), Derby County (85 apps – 17 goals).
Beginning at Bury, David Nugen truly made his name at Preston North End. Joining in 2005, he quickly became the poster boy for the division. His form was so clinical that in 2007, he became the first Preston player in 49 years to earn an England cap.
Famously, he scored on his debut against Andorra (which is considered one of the most debated ‘stolen goals’ in football history, since the ball was inches from crossing the line from Jermain Defoe’s shot).

Nugent’s most successful era was undoubtedly with Leicester City. Between 2011 and 2014, he was the heartbeat of the Foxes’ attack, forming a lethal partnership with a young Jamie Vardy. His 20-goal haul in the 2013/14 season was the engine that powered Leicester back to the Premier League, setting the stage for their eventual fairy-tale title win a few years later.
In fact, Nugent had developed a reputation as a “promotion charm”. Middlesbrough paid over £4 million to bring his experience to the Riverside, and he delivered yet again to help them secure a return to the top flight in 2016.
However, like many Championship greats, the Premier League proved to be a tougher nut to crack. Despite a big £6 million move to Portsmouth early in his career, a final top-flight season with Leicester City, and a short stint at Burnley, he never quite found the same clinical edge at the highest level.
Despite this, with 121 goals, he remains one of the most beloved and successful strikers to ever grace the second tier.
2. Jordan Rhodes – 124 Goals
-
Ipswich Town (10 apps – 1 goal), Blackburn Rovers (159 apps – 83 goals), Middlesbrough (18 apps – 6 goals), Sheffield Wednesday (101 apps – 18 goals), Norwich City (36 apps – 6 goals), Huddersfield (57 apps – 10 goals).
Jordan Rhodes began his Championship journey at Ipswich Town, but it was his phenomenal three-year explosion at Huddersfield Town between 2009 and 2012 that truly announced his arrival. During that clinical stint in League One, he netted a staggering 71 goals, making him the most sought-after young striker in English football.

Blackburn Rovers eventually won the race for his signature in 2012, and it proved to be an inspired piece of recruitment. Over four prolific seasons at Ewood Park, Rhodes established himself as a certified “goal-machine”, scoring 83 Championship goals and terrorizing defenses with his elite movement.
Following his peak years at Blackburn, Rhodes brought his predatory instincts to several ambitious clubs, featuring for Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, and Norwich City, before eventually making an emotional return to Huddersfield Town. Although his later years saw him adopt a more experienced, supporting role, his peak era remains one of the most clinical periods any striker has ever enjoyed in the history of the division.
Yet, he is the prime example of a Championship specialist. When he finally reached the Premier League with Boro, he looked like a fish out of water. The increased speed of play meant he was often isolated, and his lack of all-around contribution became a liability for a team fighting for every point. He failed to score a single Premier League goal that season.
1. Billy Sharp – 130 Goals
-
Sheffield United (204 apps – 60 goals), Doncaster Rovers (98 apps – 44 goals), Southampton (15 apps – 9 goals), Nottingham Forest (39 apps – 10 goals), Reading (10 apps – 2 goals), Leeds United (33 apps – 5 goals), Hull City (11 apps – 0 goals)
When you mention the Championship, the first name that comes to mind is Billy Sharp – who is ranked number one on the list of Championship all-time scorers.

Sharp dedicated the vast majority of his professional career to the second tier. Beyond his three iconic stints at Sheffield United (2004-06, 2007-10, and 2015-23), he also joined a variety of clubs across the division, including Doncaster Rovers, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, and Hull City.
Remarkably, his most legendary chapter began in 2015 when he returned to Sheffield United for a third time. At the time, the Blades were languishing in the third tier (League One). Sharp was appointed captain and immediately became the catalyst for a historic revival. In the 2016-17 season, he netted a staggering 30 goals to lead the club to the League One title with 100 points.
The momentum did not stop there. Just two seasons later, he captained the club to a promotion spot in the Championship, taking them from League One all the way back to the Premier League in a short span.
For years, critics labeled Sharp as a “Championship striker” who lacked the pace for the top flight. However, at the age of 33, he finally got a sustained crack at the Premier League during the 2019-20 season, scoring on his debut against Bournemouth.
Sharp played a vital role in Chris Wilder’s tactical system, providing leadership and a physical presence that helped the newly promoted side finish in an incredible 9th place. While he wasn’t scoring 20 goals a season like he did in the lower leagues, his intelligence and ability to hold up the ball against world-class defenders proved he belonged.
Even in his mid-30s, Sharp remained a handful for Premier League giants, eventually reaching the milestone of 250 career league goals while playing at the highest level.
