At the time of publication, João Gomes is the only player included on the Premier League’s official suspension list. His ban began in Gameweek 2, meaning two matches remain before he can return.
Players unavailable through injury or omitted from their club’s registered Premier League squad are not included. Those absences are different from a disciplinary suspension.
João Gomes – Aston Villa
João Gomes received a straight red card during Aston Villa’s 4-0 defeat at Brighton on the opening weekend of the season.
The midfielder kicked out at Georginio Rutter after losing possession shortly before half-time. The referee initially allowed play to continue, but a VAR review led to Gomes being dismissed for violent conduct.
A standard violent-conduct offence carries a three-match suspension. Gomes consequently missed Aston Villa’s Gameweek 2 meeting with Arsenal and remains unavailable against Hull City and Nottingham Forest.
He will be eligible to return in Gameweek 5, provided the FA does not impose an additional punishment. No extension has been announced, and the official Premier League suspension list currently shows his ban covering Gameweeks 2, 3 and 4.
His absence removes one of Unai Emery’s new midfield options during a difficult opening period for Villa. It may create further opportunities for Leon Goretzka or another central midfielder to start alongside the remaining senior players.
Which Premier League Players Are Close to a Ban?
No Premier League player is currently one yellow card away from an automatic suspension.
The season is only two rounds old, so even players booked in both matches remain some distance from the first five-yellow-card threshold. This section will become more relevant as the campaign progresses, particularly during the weeks before each club completes its 19th league fixture.
Players with three or four bookings will be added to the watchlist once they move within realistic reach of a suspension.
How Do Premier League Yellow-Card Suspensions Work?
A player who receives five yellow cards during his club’s first 19 Premier League matches must serve a one-match league suspension.
The timing matters. If a player remains on four bookings when his club completes its 19th fixture, he has passed the first threshold and will not receive a suspension for collecting his fifth booking later in the season.
A second threshold then applies. Any player who accumulates 10 Premier League yellow cards up to and including his club’s 32nd match receives a two-match league suspension.
Yellow cards are competition-specific. Bookings collected in the Premier League do not count towards a player’s total in the FA Cup or EFL Cup. Equally, a domestic cup booking is not added to his Premier League total.
How Long Is a Premier League Red-Card Ban?
The length of a red-card suspension depends on the offence:
- A dismissal for two yellow cards normally results in a one-match ban.
- Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity normally brings a one-match ban.
- Offensive, insulting or abusive language normally results in a two-match ban.
- Serious foul play usually carries a three-match ban.
- Violent conduct usually carries a three-match ban.
These are standard punishments rather than absolute limits. The FA can increase a suspension when an incident is considered exceptionally serious or when a player commits further misconduct after being dismissed.
A club may also submit a wrongful-dismissal claim. If the appeal succeeds, the red card and automatic suspension can be withdrawn. An unsuccessful appeal does not automatically produce an additional match unless the claim is judged to have had no reasonable prospect of success.

Do Red-Card Bans Apply in the FA Cup and EFL Cup?
Yes. Unlike accumulated yellow cards, red-card suspensions can carry across the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.
This means a player sent off in a league match may serve part or all of his suspension in a domestic cup fixture. A player dismissed in the EFL Cup or FA Cup can also be unavailable for his club’s next Premier League match.
European competitions are treated separately. A domestic red-card suspension does not normally prevent a player from appearing in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League unless UEFA has imposed its own punishment.
