All Players Who Played for Both Arsenal and Leeds United

Arsenal and Leeds United have usually met as rivals rather than regular trading partners. Even so, their shared history includes title winners, academy graduates, short-term loanees and several players remembered far more strongly at one club than the other.

A total of 22 players have made a senior competitive appearance for both Arsenal and Leeds United. Illan Meslier is the newest connection between the clubs, although he is still waiting to make his official Arsenal debut and therefore does not yet qualify as the 23rd player to complete the double.

The appearance figures below cover senior competitive matches. Totals for older players can vary slightly between historical databases depending on which competitions are included.

1. John Lukic

  • Leeds United: 1978–1983 and 1990–1996 (Apps: 431 | Goals: 0)
  • Arsenal: 1983–1990 and 1996–2001 (Apps: 298 | Goals: 0)

No player connects Arsenal and Leeds more successfully than John Lukic.

The goalkeeper joined Arsenal from Leeds in 1983 and became a central part of George Graham’s developing side. His most famous season came in 1988/89, when he played every league match as Arsenal won the title in dramatic fashion at Anfield.

Lukic returned to Leeds in 1990 after Arsenal signed David Seaman. Two years later, he completed another full league campaign as Howard Wilkinson’s side became champions of England.

That made Lukic the rare goalkeeper to win the league with both clubs. He later returned to Arsenal as an experienced deputy, completing a career spent entirely with the Gunners and Leeds.

2. David O’Leary

  • Arsenal: 1975–1993 (Apps: 722 | Goals: 14)
  • Leeds United: 1993–1995 (Apps: 10 | Goals: 0)

David O’Leary remains Arsenal’s record appearance holder, having played 722 competitive matches during an extraordinary 18-year first-team career.

The Irish defender won two league titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups with Arsenal. His calm reading of the game allowed him to remain useful even after younger defenders began receiving more minutes.

O’Leary joined Leeds in 1993, but injuries limited him to ten appearances before retirement. His playing spell at Elland Road was brief, although he later became much more important to the club as a manager.

Under O’Leary, Leeds reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2000 and the Champions League semi-finals one year later.

3. David Rocastle

  • Arsenal: 1985–1992 (Apps: 277 | Goals: 34)
  • Leeds United: 1992–1993 (Apps: 34 | Goals: 2)

Few Arsenal players are remembered with as much affection as David Rocastle.

Known as “Rocky”, the midfielder combined skill, determination and an obvious emotional connection with the club. He won the League Cup in 1987 and played important roles in Arsenal’s league-title victories of 1988/89 and 1990/91.

His move to Leeds in 1992 was difficult for both Rocastle and Arsenal supporters to accept. Leeds were the reigning champions and paid a substantial fee, but injuries prevented him from establishing himself at Elland Road.

Rocastle still made 34 appearances and scored twice before leaving for Manchester City in December 1993.

4. Lee Chapman

  • Arsenal: 1982–1983 (Apps: 28 | Goals: 4)
  • Leeds United: 1990–1993 and 1996 (Apps: 171 | Goals: 80)

Lee Chapman had an unremarkable period at Arsenal but became one of the defining forwards of Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds.

Arsenal signed Chapman from Stoke City in 1982, hoping he could provide a reliable physical presence in attack. He scored only four times in 28 appearances and left for Sunderland the following year.

His career eventually came alive at Leeds. Chapman’s goals helped the club win promotion to the First Division in 1990 before he scored 21 league goals during the 1991/92 title-winning season.

He finished his Leeds career with 80 goals, making him considerably more important at Elland Road than he had been at Highbury.

5. Ben White

  • Leeds United: 2019–2020, loan (Apps: 49 | Goals: 1)
  • Arsenal: 2021–present (Apps: 190+ | Goals: 7)

Ben White spent only one season at Leeds, but it was one of the most important periods of his development.

Loaned from Brighton & Hove Albion, White played every Championship match as Leeds won promotion in 2019/20. His composure, pace and ability to carry the ball made him an ideal defender for Marcelo Bielsa’s demanding system.

Leeds wanted to sign him permanently, but Brighton retained him for their Premier League squad. Arsenal subsequently paid £50 million for White in 2021.

Initially used as a centre-back, he later became an effective right-back. His passing, defensive awareness and willingness to move into midfield have made him a regular part of Arsenal’s first team.

6. Eddie Nketiah

  • Arsenal: 2017–2024 (Apps: 168 | Goals: 38)
  • Leeds United: 2019–2020, loan (Apps: 19 | Goals: 5)

Arsenal academy graduate Eddie Nketiah joined Leeds on loan for the first half of their 2019/20 promotion season.

He scored important goals in limited minutes, including late winners against Brentford and Barnsley. However, Patrick Bamford remained Marcelo Bielsa’s preferred striker, and Arsenal recalled Nketiah in January 2020.

Back in north London, he developed into a useful first-team forward. He never became Arsenal’s undisputed starting striker, but 38 goals in 168 appearances represented a respectable return.

Nketiah also enjoyed a memorable reunion with Leeds in May 2022, scoring twice against his former loan club in a 2-1 Arsenal victory.

7. Jermaine Pennant

  • Arsenal: 1999–2005 (Apps: 26 | Goals: 3)
  • Leeds United: 2003–2004, loan (Apps: 36 | Goals: 2)

Jermaine Pennant produced one of the strangest Arsenal records: all three of his goals for the club arrived in the same match.

The winger scored a hat-trick against Southampton on his first Premier League start in May 2003. Despite that performance, he struggled to earn a regular place under Arsène Wenger.

Pennant spent the following season on loan at Leeds, making 36 appearances as the club battled financial problems and relegation. He offered pace and width but could not prevent Leeds from dropping out of the Premier League.

His talent was obvious at both clubs, although his most consistent top-flight football came later with Birmingham City and Liverpool.

8. Illan Meslier

  • Leeds United: 2019–2026 (Apps: 215 | Goals: 0)
  • Arsenal: 2026–present (Apps: 0 | Goals: 0)

Illan Meslier belongs in the story, but with an important qualification.

The French goalkeeper made 215 competitive appearances for Leeds after initially arriving from Lorient on loan. He became first choice during the 2019/20 promotion campaign and remained in goal through several turbulent Premier League and Championship seasons.

Meslier joined Arsenal in July 2026. However, he has not yet made a senior competitive appearance for the Gunners.

For that reason, he is included as the newest notable connection between Arsenal and Leeds but is not currently counted among the 22 players who have officially represented both first teams.
